Nomis:
Self-Titled
Nomis. Who is the man that hides within this elusive alias? Who is casually posing on a lakeshore on his album cover a.k.a, two pieces of folded computer paper in his goatee, his shaggy do, his unbuttoned denim vest and shell necklaces? Leave it to Google to solve this mystery. After searching for the song Floatin on My Ride, it is discovered that Nomis has scribed these lyrics on Blogit, The Online Writing Marketplace. Nomis is revealed to be Simon A. Sargent of Ogdensburg, N.Y. Thats right folks: Nomis is Simon. Backwards. Aright, I know Ive got to give the guy credit for getting out there and making an album all on his own actually, via T.O.P Records, or Totally Original Productions, which I believe is also a Nomis original. And its very sweet that his credits thank his wife (Laurie, or Eirual for Nomis fans) and his three kids one of whom gets a shoutout in Rockin My Baby. But a girl can only give a guy like Nomis so much of a break especially when you start actually listening to the songs. His voice isnt bad some kind of throaty blend of Neil Diamond and Elvis Costello. Reflecting the earthy images on his album cover, Nomis is accompanied solely by his acoustic guitar. The four-chord melodies are pretty if repetitive and at times even Neil Young-ish; they could be easily and vastly improved upon with the addition of some catchy choruses. But the lyrics, the lyrics. They would be interesting if they werent so bland, poignant if they werent so cheesy, good if they werent so bad. For example, from Floatin on My Ride, an apparent ode to surfing or canoeing or something: Were living like tramps cause were all here at camp/Where the hell are youSiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! (Thats what was written in the liner notes, I swear.) If I was married to Nomis, I would probably be thrilled to receive this soft-hearted, earnest effort for an anniversary present. And if I was one of Nomis daughters, it would be kinda cute to have Dad on his very own CD. But as a music reviewer, it seems sort of backwards. Maybe Nomis should just keep his tunes in the ylimaf.
