Not For Scholars: Self-Titled EP At two songs and a little over seven minutes, the demo disc from Not For Scholars isnt too long. Unfortunately, thats about the only positive thing I can say about it. As far as acoustic rock goes, bands generally have to work really hard to make their music interesting, because they dont have some of the tricks that non-acoustic bands have to fall back on. Some bands (such as Guster) use what might be seen as disadvantages (only 2 guitars and percussion, lack of rock) to their advantage, and push the boundaries of their sound. Not For Scholars share the same instruments as Guster (theres acoustic and electric guitar and congas/bongos), but the similarities stop there. The lyrics are muddled, and there are no melodies to be found on either track. The music is fine, but even with only two songs, they pretty much both sounded the same. Im not sure who is singing on the disc, but he makes it very difficult to understand what hes saying (lack of melodies certainly hurts this as well). Singers can get away with mumbling only if whats behind them is engaging or interesting. Not For Scholars would probably be okay to have as background noise in a bar or at a frat party (and, generally, thats what this sort of music ends up being), but it isnt something Id imagine anyone putting on otherwise.
