Olympic Hopefuls: The Fuses Refuse to Burn
[2024]

As a side project for the starter guys, Erik Appelwick and Darren Jackson, the Olympic Hopefuls sound is quite different from what theyre used to.  However, from the listeners perspective, their sound is not different.  In fact, when I first popped the CD into my car stereo, I thought I hit the radio button by mistake.  Its almost funny that this is what comes of a side project when most bands use such an opportunity to experiment and try out the unusual.

With influences like Beulah and The Cars, these guys fit right in with todays indie pop.  If they arent trying to stand out but rather pull together a radio-friendly sound, they have achieved their goal.  High in energy and clapping add-in sounds, the guys of OH have provided the music world with yet another album for the Weezer fan.

The only song that really stood out was the incredibly upbeat Pretty Bigmouth with its swingin beat, keyboard and harmonica.  This song shows the most potential and uncovers a fun side to the group.  Plus it makes you want to get up and shake your booty, which is not a bad thing.

Studio gloss, depthless lyrics, and keyboard-derived claps aside, the guys of Olympic Hopefuls know how to put together some good pop songs with solid instrumentation in the classic rocker fashion.  So if youre looking for another pop album to add to your collection, look no further; the debut album from Olympic Hopefuls is here.

Keep trying to light that fuse, guys. Youve got a full box of matches in your back pocket.
