Hotel: Good Morning, West Gordon
I believe that every song, even every album, has its own time and place. If you are lucky enough to hear the music in its element, its like striking gold. When you smell the same scents or hear the same sounds of that moment again, that song will ring through your mind. The song is part of that moment forever. It was far too early one Monday when I hurried to the train. The smell of wet grass and that just-rained freshness lingered in the air as the birds chattered in the cherry trees. I slid into a seat by the window just as the doors shut. The morning sun cast a golden sheen over the slowly waking city. Starlight played in my headphones as I witnessed another new day just beginning. This is that perfect moment. Their sophomore release, Good Morning, West Gordon, is an album of memories and experiences, not just words put to music. The acoustic-based, alt-country band manages to incorporate the right amount of pop in their catchy tunes. Each track is filled with heart and soul and set to well-arranged music that is not overdone. Thank goodness they chose not include over-the-top electric guitar solos and instead focused on the quality of the music and the lyrics. Lead singer Steve Yutzy-Burkey has a voice reminiscent of both the Eels Mark Oliver Everett and Wilcos Jeff Tweedy, but its less quirky and a bit softer. While Cant Be Trusted sounds like it could be straight off an earlier Wilco album, it is still a definite hit for One Star Hotel. The lyrics and style of this group are sincere and successful at drawing the listener in to experience their world. Solid from beginning to end, Good Morning, West Gordon is a great way to start any day.
