Masterpiece
This is a tough one, not because I had a hard time getting through it, or anything. Its not a bad record. Its just a weird one (part experiment, part nonsense, part music, I guess). And I dont know how else to describe it but to say they sound like two guys who cant sing very well covering the Beatles at their absolute weirdest, thrown in with some Zappa and a shitload of dissonance, all delivered in a lo-fi package. Thats Owen...in a nutshell. Oh, and theyre a bit spooky, too. For a little while, I just didnt know what to make of them. Are they really this weird, or are they trying to be? In these hyper-ironic times when its hard to know anyones intentions (especially in the indie-rock world), what can you do as the audience? This record challenged me to the point where I thought I was answering a trick question (you know youre in trouble when the old What is art? query pops in your head.) Look too closely, and youre in danger of being swallowed by the paradox. To end the deliberating, I just asked myself, Do you like this record? Not really.
