The Paper Rose: Eyes Open and Wide Awake (EP)
[PA Records]

Listening to the Paper Rose's seven-track EP, Eyes Open and Wide Awake, was by far one of my stranger musical experiences.  Track one, entitled "Instrumental" is far from what its title suggests while the acoustic guitar is being played, a woman's voice is heard in the background whispering relaxation techniques similar to what you might hear on a stop-smoking tape.  Not only is much of what the woman says incomprehensible, she entirely distracts from the actual music, which would defeat the purpose of an instrumental track where typically the music is showcased in the forefront.

Track two, "An Introduction to an Exit" isn't much better.  The music is so dense that it drowns out the vocals, which cannot even be described as mediocre.  With no disrespect intended, I must say that the vocals are a flat monotone with absolutely no range at all.  The first two minutes of the song are actually painful as the repetitive music drowns out the vocals I couldn't make out any of the lyrics. Fortunately, track three is a major improvement, with a much softer voice and much softer guitar sound.  "To You from Me" is the one bright spot on this otherwise lacking EP.

The sound quality is consistently poor, with vocals being loud and then suddenly muted on a track or vice-versa.  Lyrically, some talent is apparent.  Adam Tsai and Patrick Stinnett, who make up The Paper Rose, have somewhat of a knack for writing. My suggestion is for them to sell their songs to others who can adequately sing and offer some musical variation.
