The Paper Champions: Weekend of Compromise
[Reason Y]

Georgia is a great place that pumps out a good amount of quality material.  Some of my recent favorites are from there, and Im always excited when I come across another group from the peach state.  And while I had hopes for the sophomore effort from this quartet, I was sad to find that this was yet another typical emo-rock album with little new and exciting flavor.

As soon as the first track started up, I knew exactly how the album would sound and even thought I had already heard a song similar before.  I was not the least bit surprised when the sappy emo vocals started up.  Does one have to try to sound like that, or is it the lack of trying that produces such a sound?  Either way, it just sounds vocally lazy instead of emotionally charged.  And its too bad because the boys do know how to harmonize and throw a decent tune around if they want to.  Still, the talking, or whatever, in Words and Inaction is just odd.

I find myself enjoying the instrumentation on a good number of the tracks and some of them even remind me a little of Maserati, one of my favorite groups out of Athens.  The two share a similar driving feel that causes a song to rise and build.  The similarities also lie in the harmonious, layered guitars and drums.  It is this hint of a little something extra that stands out the most for me.  I would like to see more experimentation and growth in this direction.

I can see this band gathering a group of fans that just cant get enough emo in their lives, but its their music that I think can help them get past the typical rating.  It tends to be less of a jump-to beat than the ordinary, and this is a good thing.  I can say that the album does get better as it plays.  But dont be fooled by the 9:26 song length of the closing track Sleep, as there are about 3 minutes of dead space in the middle.
