Pattern Is
Movement: The (Im)possibility of Longing
The Real Problem with Pattern is Movements The (Im)possibility of Longing is finding the problem with this album. And no, thats not a roundabout compliment. The album comes in quite a bit too strong with opening track non servium, instantly smacking the listener with loud shrill moaning vocals on an otherwise staccato math-rockish repeating guitar line. Too jarring, too intense, and theres no attempt to bring the listener easily into this story. And the most interesting and well done aspect of this album is the storytelling. Themes as creating the story from the pattern of music, each song is written as part of the whole, building up through a story arc of emotion, sadness, triumph, etc. as the songs progress. As an idea, Patten is Movement want to tell a story not through words, but through the combined pieces of an album. And for what its worth, they truly pull it off. And there is no lack of talent in this band. Use of strange mixing devices, repeated guitar lines, minimal vocals, and changes in mood per track, sometimes within a track, show off a compete understanding of making music. Hell, making good music. Yet as the story unfolds, perhaps the most perplexing thing about the album is this: its good, right? So why dont I want to listen to it? And really, this flaw only falls on the listener. So really this is what I have to say about Pattern is Movement: this is an album for the true music snob and the introspective listener looking for the introspective album. Theres nothing obvious or clich in this offering. And while that is its strongest point, it also seems to be its major failing. Because theres nothing to make you want to play it for your friends, either.
