Chasing People: The Dayglow Light of Sleep
This release really is worth taking note of. People Chasing People is a band that just relocated to the DC area from Tallahassee, Florida. In fact, as I write this review, they are playing a show at DC9 tonight, and judging from their website theyve been hitting the DC clubs pretty hard since their recent move. The band loves to play live, but their recorded debut The Dayglow Light of Sleep does a good job catching my attention. Take the opening track You Are Loved for starters. A little guitar opens it up in a way that sort of conjures up memories of the Afghan Whigs circa Black Love. Then we get some great staggered drumming that could be Sunny Day Real Estate or something similar. The music remains catchy and challenging, and the singing only gets better on later tracks like Come up and See Me and A Sailor. The latter recalls a bit of those DC to New York transplants The Walkmen at times. Despite good attempts to stay fresh, a few songs use emo-riffic songwriting techniques, but theres good substance underneath these familiarities so it doesnt really detract much from the song quality. Its kind of like how the Get Up Kids might have sounded if the emo backlash hadnt scared them into writing shameless pop tunes or whatever the hell their last two album were. One Cool Astronaut is a barrel of fun. It starts off fast and heavy like Hum before digging into the band name People Chasing People Chasing People Chasing People Chasing People Chasing People Chasing which works surprisingly well. Had Enough Yet? and The Golden Mountain bring in a tiny bit of synthesizer making you wonder if these guys could go the direction of Hot Hot Heat or The Killers in a few years. In the end, my excessive band-name-dropping should clue you in to the variety of sounds these guys manage to come up with on this album. And the delivery is all quite professional, which suggests that all those live shows have made the band quite proficient with their instruments. This is an impressive debut, and I have a feeling that these guys could be dangerous when they figure out exactly what style they want to focus on, or if their lyricist develops a bit more of an edge. Perfect bands are rarely born overnight, but People Chasing People do seem to have a head start.
