John Surge and Jeff Donahue knew each other while they were playing in different bands around Long Beach, CA. John put out a fanzine, and Jeff owned a rehearsal studio where tons of bands in the scene rehearsed.  The two got to talking about music and what they wanted to do; soon they were writing a whole albums worth of material that would become the Trouble Doll CD with the goal of creating a guitar album inspired by the spirit of bands they loved, like The Replacements, X, Frank Black, and Husker Du.  After enduring various lineups, John and Jeff hooked up with expatriate Australian bass player Fluffy and drummer Matt 'O Connor, who played with Flourescein and toured with The Plimsouls.  To record Trouble Doll, John and Jeff put together a ragtag home studio and brought in producer Jim Oddo to help guide them through a recording that would capture the band in all its ragged glory. With the songs recorded, the band circulated tapes to every indie label they could track down. Soon they hooked up with kindred spirit Dave Lebental of Pinch Hit Records, an upstart label in the bands own South Bay area.
