Pinwheel - Trouble Doll
Its a good thing I kept listening after the first two
songs on this album. To be honest,
Pinwheels Trouble Doll starts off disappointingly. The opening song, Superball, is one of the
lowest-energy songs on the disc, and it never really gets things going like
Track Ones are supposed to do. Its
a tricky thing picking a suitable Track One, so I let that slide. But then track two is quite a misstep as well; the song
Everything is a blatant rip-off of Urge Overkills Positive
Bleeding. The only thing Pinwheel did differently was put the
song in a minor key and change the words (sort of).
The chorus is different, but the verses are almost exactly the same. The
lyrics even discuss a similar subject matter! Though I was tempted, Im glad I didnt take Trouble
Doll out of my CD player and put in Urge Overkills Saturation,
because the rest of the disc is actually pretty good even though Pinwheel never really
strays far from Urge Overkills grungy, punk-infused power-pop sound.
Anyway stands out because of its softer melodies and guitars that actually
might not wake up the neighbors. Towards
the middle of the disc, songs like King of Overhaul and Oh Charles
has Pinwheel showing its grunge colors. As
the disc comes to a close, Just Like Me, and Iodine hint at the
bands classic punk, Ramones-style influences.
One of the discs highlights is a rocking version of English Beats
Save It For Later that Pinwheel has stamped with its garage rock style.
