Pitch Black Dream:
Never Going Home
Pitch Black Dream is a New York outfit comprised of Bernadette McCallion & Rich Gaglia. Together, they are forging a new sound in electronic music for 2003 dreamy, beat driven and hypnotic with a pop crossover edge. Reflecting on that statement, I would say there is more than an edge of pop crossover. The majority of the songs on this record have a rather generic, airy vibe to them. McCallion has a thick like honey voice that punctuates all the songs. Sadly the music itself is limp and uninspired. Much of it seems to be borrowed from already overused R&B melodies, keyboard beds and typical electronic beats. One of the songs almost sounds like the Janet Jackson hit Thats The Way Love Goes with Pitch Black Dreams title being Thats The Way It Goes. I am no expert on Jackson but the inflection in McCallions chorus vocals is much the same as Jacksons and that is all I hear when I listen to this song. There are no risks being taken on this record, and thats cool. No one ever said there had to be, because it certainly isnt a requirement. I just love when I listen to a new record and it is so, so good that all I want to do is play it over and over. It doesnt have to reinvent the wheel; it just has to be great. Pitch Black Dreams debut album Never Going Home is too much monotony to allow any of the songs to have a life or love of their own. It is an album that is pretty much jam packed with more of the same. If you are into tame, dreamy songs, then this record is for you. I hope that on their next outing these kids put more original thought into their record, because then they might have something. Or maybe they could just borrow from a different genre than that of the sleepy love songs.
