The Plastic Constellations: Mazatlan
[2024]

The Plastic Constellations exuberant sophomore release Mazatlan is rife with infectious hooks, rollicking choruses and a genuine sense of fun. Good indie rock can be hard to find nowadays. Many bands are either a regurgitation of earlier indie icons or else so far outside the aesthetic of the genre that they really cant be called indie. The Plastic Constellations balance the two extremes, paying homage to predecessors like Sonic Youth and The Dismemberment Plan without shying away from innovation. This is most notable in the rapping on songs like Movement Momentum and Beats Like You Stole Something: half rap and half atonal emo choruses. These guys have the choruses down pat, but the rapping, quite honestly, could be better.

Aaron Mader and Jeff Allen drive the album with their dueling guitars. Davico, for example, has a few guitar solos and riffs that practically throw the listener into involuntary air-guitar seizures. Guitars and oh-so-sing-along-able choruses are this bands bread and butter, and they use them to their advantage. Songs like We Came to Play utilize the classic call and response and claps to reach out and jitter the listener.

Hailing from Minneapolis, the Plastic Constellations have been playing together since 1995. Now 22 years of age, this is still their first and only band. Growing up together, maturing as artists and people, this band has been stewing in its own influences for almost ten years. While The Plastic Constellations havent reached maturity just yet, they show much promise.
