Possum Moods:
Self-Titled The duo Mia Schoen (Sleepy Township, Huon, Long Weekend) and Jen Turrell (Boyracer, Rabbit in Red, Fog and Ocean) explore the depths of lush harmonies that, on this Self-Titled album, seem to wax and wane like couples ice-skating arabesques across a fragile lake touched by an early frost. This incandescent, haunting record seems to weave a script for a low-budget B-movie containing two contemplative patrons frequenting a cavernous dive bar as veins of smoke from their respective cigarettes climb up towards the conciliatory urgings of a fan dissipating the smoky grayness into evanescent memories. Although sparsely arranged around minimally ornate echoes of sound created with resonant tambourines and flagging vocals, the core of the record beats with dilatory warmth that outlasts these temporally limited song skeletons; the result is a 14-song summation that lasts no more than 28 minutes total. The somber female vocals are held in a dreamy limbo of steadily whispered harmonies over minor chord progressions that seem to pick up moderate speed only when the excitable crash symbol begins pursuing the solid snare. The primordial musings in the songs seem akin to a more rhythmically conventional Huon in that they maintain a similar weighty organic quality; however the lack of variation in rhythm and tone on Possum Moods makes it somewhat more of a singular moment or emotion as opposed to a developing or progressive reality. Thus, this album manages to hold the listener in a silently contemplative state of rest, neither destroying nor embellishing ones thoughts for the future; instead, it preserves them beneath a sheet of frozen hyaline.
