Presley: Self-Titled
There are a few things you should know about this self-titled album by Presley. Aside from the first song, Ambulance, none of the songs seem to be related to their song titles in any obvious way. Theres RC-P90, an instrumental track named after one of the guns from Goldeneye. Then theres the bands odd habit of naming songs after people this album includes Doug Henning, Art Garfunkel, Boz Scaggs, and Jennifer Lopez. A visit to the bands website informed me that they have new songs in the works entitled David Coverdale, Diane Keaton, and Isaac Hayes, so be on the lookout for those. I havent seen this sort of name dropping since Wesley Willis died, and quite frankly, it makes me nervous. I mean how can you take a band seriously when they have a song called Jennifer Lopez? Presley does seem to want to be taken seriously, though. Their songs are long and elaborate, primarily revolving around the guitar work, a page ripped out of the Lee Ranaldo correspondence course workbook. The lyrics need a bit of explanation I doubt anyone besides the band knows exactly what theyre singing about. The singing itself? Not too great, but you dont mind it as much after approximately three listens. The album cover is arty black and white. All of this is evidence supporting the case that Presley is a group of serious musicians. So why is there a song called Jennifer Lopez? I have no idea. Production-wise, this album sounds like a demo. The recording seems too raw and unfinished some of the guitar tones are awful, the mix is jarring at points where it shouldnt be, and the stereo panning is cookie-cutter. But with the right man behind the boards and calling the shots, this band might really have something. Unfortunately Today Is the Days Steve Austin is not that man. Aside from production issues, there seem to be some flaws with the bands performance as well, especially when they switch tempos. Naming your band Presley is the musical equivalent of using Gods name in vain. Perhaps they cursed themselves when committing this sin. This is not a bad album, but theres too much wrong with it for it to be great. Presley seems to be heading in the right direction, and if they play their cards right, they may have a bright future ahead of them. Well just have to wait and see.
