A Problem of Alarming Dimensions: H-Hov-Hover
[8088 Records]

Their name gives away their style: only one of todays hip post-rock bands could possibly have a name like A Problem of Alarming Dimensions.  Id say that h-hov-hover combines atmospheric post-rock in the vein of Godspeed You! Black Emperor with traces of experimental space rock.  The album also reminds me, somewhat, of the Austin, Texas band Explosions in the Sky (albeit a less intense version).  The electronic experimentation on h-hov-hover makes the album sound a little bit less apocalyptic and a little bit more psychedelic than the genre norm.  Add that to the calming atmospherics and the non-overly-depressive melodies and youve got an album thats musically interesting but not necessarily on the verge of sucking out your soul.  Overall, the approach works pretty well, though I do have a few complaints.

One minor complaint is that the harsh, atonal vocals on the song Non-Deterministic Finite Automaton dont really fit the musical mood, and the album as a whole would likely be better off without them.  Theres only about one minutes worth of vocals on the entire album, so thats little to worry about.  My other more general reservation is that there are so many bands doing this kind of experimental soundscape music right now that the album doesnt seem to stand out against its competitors.  Nonetheless, A Problem of Alarming Dimensions is making good music, and its members certainly demonstrate some instrumental ability.  Despite the fact that h-hov-hover breaks little new ground, it remains a fine album for those who appreciate space rock, post-rock, or generally peaceful (though occasionally weird) soundscapes.
