Pushcar:
The Social Side of Midnight
Pushcar sounds like what I am presupposing might be called adult-oriented progressive alternative indie music. Too much? Maybe. But it is hard to put these fellas into any sort of category, and my first reaction was that they sounded more like grown ups in their music, vocals and lyrics than teen boys or even young men. Why does young men or young man always sound wrong? I just dont like that term. Young guy serves me better. What I am trying to say in my own roundabout way is that Pushcar layers and crafts their songs in an appreciating and knowing way, unlike a 16-year old playing teen-oriented type alternative stuff in his underwear or a guy in his late twenties penning sad, sad pop songs to some dame who broke his heart ten years ago. Pushcar do hold fast to their southern California roots, which it is evident throughout this, their second record. These guys have been around in one band or another since the 80s, the two original members having released the first Pushcar album Apartment D all by themselves. The Social Side of Midnight is forty minutes of soothing guitar and meaningful lyrics about life and living it. Midnight is almost always social; its what happens after the hour has passed that is worth writing about. Not everyone will find this more mature version of rock to their liking, but at least give these guys a chance. You never know, you might just soak it up.
