Radio Silence:
Submitted for Your Approval
Back in the late 80s, my parents decided to take me to Disneyland via good ol scenic Highway 101 that wound its way from the Northwest Peninsula in Washington State down the coast to the sunshine state. To this day, I cant think of that trip without hearing ZZ Top as part of the soundtrack. I get shivers just thinking about it. While Submitted for Your Approval doesnt exactly replicate the music of the bearded, sunglasses-wearing trio, there is something about their music that conjures up these old memories of mine. Perhaps the almost sappy, melodic singing that turns some of these songs into something fit for a commercial or maybe its the electric guitar solos frequently thrown about. Now throw in some influences from John Mellencamp and Eric Clapton, even a slight hint at the Moody Blues, and youre getting close to the Radio Silence sound. In their few best moments and I do mean very few, they hint at the classic instrumentation of Pink Floyd, like in the beginning of Way Out of Line and bits and pieces from Dangerous Curves. Or perhaps Im just trying really hard to hear something other than the American country-rock music that even my dad stopped listening to ten years ago. The sound quality of the album is good as is the instrument-playing. With songs like Its About Time Baby, this album is fit for anyone looking to recapture his 80s youth, dust off his old Chevy and take it for a spin. Just think, you could be cruisin down the dusty highway with the lyrics from Wild-Hearted Soul blaring from your stereo: Im a wild-hearted soul/ Earth Mother, show me where to go/ Im a wild-hearted soul. Just dont forget your air guitar; youll have plenty of opportunities to give it a good workout.
