The Raveonettes: Whip It On (EP)
The Raveonettes debut EP Whip It On is stellar! As soon as the first note graced my ears, I was hooked. From the time I pressed play, I felt as though I had been transformed into a fabulous glamazon from some dirty B-movie and I liked it! Maybe The Cramps and Dick Dale got together and did the soundtrack but oh no, no, no through unique distinction, I realized it is rather the sixties-influenced musical stylings of the The Raveonettes. Or better yet, the musical talents of the mastermind himself, Sune Rose Wagner. Wagner, who handles vocals and guitar, had the entire album ready to go and was just awaiting the perfect dame to come along and add sultry lyrics and bass. This he found in Sharin Foo, an old acquaintance, who completes the Danish duo. I have heard that Foo did not actually play the bass all that much before meeting up again with Sune, but he was so taken with her voice that he convinced her to learn. Their efforts combined to make this debut EP the smash that it is. The whole record was recorded in glorious B Minor as the EP cover touts; its follow-up full-length, Chain Gang of Love, due out late spring/early summer of this year, promises to be recorded in B Major. I, for one, will anxiously await this release. Whip It On is so simple in production, and the music is so nostalgic, that I wonder where The Raveonettes have been all my life. Be forewarned the Raveonettes are about to be mass-marketed to the MTV cult oops, I mean crowd. MTV has a new compilation that will be released on February 25th, entitled Advance Warning, and it will include a track from The Raveonettes along with other up-and-coming acts. Good exposure, I suppose, but for a band with this much talent, I dont think theyll need it.
