Ray Mason
Band: Self-Titled
Ray Mason is a man who's been around big talent and has traveled the blue highways from gig to gig for some time, and he has done so with the same trusty guitar. (All this would make him a troubadour, right?) The experience shows. Songs from the Ray Mason Band's release, Idiot Wisdom, showcase the talent of a band mindful of their leader's talents by not being overpowering. Also showcased is the ability of a musician whose voice is as unique as his trusty guitar is twangy. Listen to songs like the title track and "Big Ass Balloon" to get a feel for how strong Mason's songwriting can be. "When the Ceiling Shakes Hands with the Floor" is kind of a honky-tonk twang mixed with a Barenaked Ladies style of sound. I think it is Ray Mason's unique vocals that suggest the latteronly two bands share that voice. This is at least one song from this album that I'd like to hear in a live setting. The last track, "Backroad Highway," could be a good soundtrack to the type of lifestyle the Ray Mason Band leads on the road. This song practically throws sawdust on the floor with its Bakersfield-style country sound and echoing electric guitar solo that would make Buck Owens proud. I can almost see the band's bus kickin' dust down a Texas highway with this one. But, damn, these guys are from Massachusettswhich is why you should lend an ear.
