Rebeka Reed: Pharaoh's Daughter

Rebeka Reed has a great voice.  This former child actress (she was in The Journey of Natty Gann!) made a name for herself in Canadian television, and has parlayed that into a start in the music business.  Her debut album, Pharaohs Daughter, was released in November of 2001, and while theres nothing really wrong with the CD, theres nothing that came out and grabbed me either.

Of the ten songs that make up the disc, seven were either written or co-written by Newfoundland songwriter Phonse Delaney.  Reed contributed lyrics on 5 of the tracks.  Its hard to review an album like this, because the songs arent necessarily bad; theyre just missing that something that grabs you by the throat and makes you think, THAT is a really great song.  The lyrics are solid, and they fit the melodies well.  The music is basic AAA fare; these songs would do well in the Sarah McLaughlin/Sheryl Crowe/Natalie Imbruglia-filled radio play lists of the mid-to-late 90s.  Theres just no bite to any of the songs, which clearly lack dynamics.  Each song starts, goes through the motions, and then ends, leading into the next song, which proceeds to do the same thing.

My other problem is with the cover art: with the tie-dyed colors and flowery backgrounds, at first glance I assumed that this would be an independently released jam-band CD.  I think it could have looked more professional in order to give the prospective listener a better idea of what the music might sound like.

This album is a decent first release by someone who is still learning what kind of musician she is.  Future CDs will probably show her growing into her influences and finding her own style.  Reed presents good, solid vocals, which could have been used to better effect on some stronger material.
