Recipe for Sunblock: Songs Through Screen Doors
[Dreamworks]

Songs Through Screen Doors is the debut EP from John Mills, and while he doesnt necessarily break any new ground with these five tracks, he has written five pretty nice songs.

Ill start off by saying this: I dont exactly know what emo is.  In fact, the only band that Ive known to be considered emo is Dashboard Confessional, which actually fits into a genre I prefer to call whiny bullshit music.  Digression aside, I hope that Recipe for Sunblock isnt emo, because I like this EP.  The songs are good, and the lyrics are a good mix of the straightforward and the arty.  For an independent recording, the tracks are very layered; acoustic guitars are covered with different electric effects, and most of the vocals are double tracked.  The songs are at times borderline bombastic, but always stop short of falling into the whiny bullshit category.  Right now, my favorite track is Dirty Films, but Im also quite fond of The Classifieds.  The fourth track, At The Same Speed, sounds like a mixture of Ben Folds music and Jeff Tweedy lyrics.  Considering this is a debut release, its surprising how assured everything sounds.  Mills has a good idea of what he wants these songs to sound like and how to get those results.

This EP probably wont be something necessarily new to your ears those discs are getting harder and harder to find.  What Songs Through Screen Doors is, however, is the perfect autumn record: not too upbeat, not too depressing, just right.
