Various Artists: Reel to Reel Records Records Sampler
[Reel to Reel]

I figure that theres no way to write about a label sampler as an album, so Ill just say a little something about each song:

Ivan Julian and the Outsets A Young Mans Money

A young mans money dont go so far these days is about the only thing that Ivan has to say in the opening track of this sampler, which is the best song on this album by far.  Its a rock song recorded like there was a single mic set up in the middle of their parents living room.  You can dance to it and stick your middle finger up at the same time.

The Battlecats Regular or Extra

Do you want your meat sloppy?/The potatoes got all soggy is the opening line of this childrens song turned rock.  This song could be okay, but the lyrics are almost too absurd to take it seriously.  By the breakdown at the end of the song, were ready for track three.

CQ Crack

CQs simple acoustic rock song isnt about the drug, but rather being on the verge of going insane.  This song isnt bad, but CQ lacks any emotion in his voice and doesnt quite hit the Belle and Sebastian song that he intended to record.

Dangaru Mile High

Mile High and A Young Mans Money are the two rock songs on this sampler. This song has a great guitar sound on the left channel and a guitar solo right out of the rock and roll handbook.  This song would work great in an iPod Commercial.

Electric Engine Make a Sound

Electric Engine has the most unique sound on this sampler.   They sound like an alt-country band that refuses to be...an alt-country band.  A very confident voice combined with layers of fuzziness makes for a song that seems like it wants to go places.

Laneview Witness

The voice that comes in before the music in this tune makes me want to sing I dont wanna kiss you, I dont want to touch every time, even though this sounds nothing like Elvis.  About a third of the way through, Laneview offers us some synthesizer to put some meat on this otherwise dull 3-minute plea to a lover.

Christopher Sullivan Empire State

Sullivans ballad consists of incomprehensible lyrics, so Im not sure if he is actually singing about New York or, for that matter, if hes even singing in English.  This song is the weakest on the sampler.  Its been written 300 times before, and I didnt like it when it came out the first time in the early nineties on Lisa Loebs album.
