Regan: Coming or Going?
Regans latest effort, Coming or Going?, is a fun, smooth, modern folk rock CD that I sincerely enjoyed. The disc has Regan blending her capable vocals with an impressive mixture of catchy melodies and help from other talented musicians. Each track has a soft rock sound with a folksy feel that has been seen most recently in the likes of Jewel and Michelle Branch. While there were some similarities between Regan and the whole genre of female acoustic rock, Regan certainly carries a distinctive flavor all her own, making each of the eleven tracks stand out. Most of the songs on this album are not quite ballads, yet not quite fast-paced; still the tempo remains on the slower side throughout. Lyrically, it is sometimes difficult to understand what Regan is saying, but the liner notes come with full lyrics. In her songs, Regan reflects on life, love and motherhood. The poignant ballad that is track six, entitled I Will Do beautifully paints the portrait of a person in awe of the radiance that someone else provides her world and the importance that someone brings into her life. Track four, Stay Home, is a sweet love song filled with passion and heartfelt lyrics such as come into my room; celebrate the new with a mouthful of you. Most remarkable is Regans ability to write simple, yet universal lyrics about normal, yet extraordinary experiences that stay with the listener. She has an insightful way of touching without prodding and feeling without gushing. Regan has a beautiful voice that is clearly a natural talent there are no bells and whistles needed to make her sound good. While she clearly has musical ability, she also has a knack for choosing well from the talented crop of Richmond musicians to make her music sound as she wants it. She is by far one of the best female vocalists in the mid-Atlantic region, and I am happy to say I am now a fan.
