Regan with Andrew Winn at College Center, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA - 2/6/03

By the time ten-thirty rolled around that night, there were already three inches of snowfall on the ground.  VDOT crews were nowhere in sight, but careful driving and desolate roads made my trek to College Center an easy one, all things considered.  Regan and the band were casually sitting around, talking, writing, munching on some candy that was placed on tables by the sponsoring group, University Program Board.  By 11 pm, I had settled into my seat with a banana-pineapple smoothie, anxiously awaiting Regans performance.

Despite the sparse crowd of twenty, Regan and the band played like it was a packed house.  Only stopping a few times to talk briefly to the quiet crowd and to request another bottle of water for her scratchy throat, Regan and company played a terrific set, complete with lively drum solos from Robby Sinclair, accomplished high-energy electric guitar from Andrew Winn [Agents of Good Roots], and an overall superb performance of many songs I was familiar with and some new ones as well.

The chemistry between Regan and the rest of her band was amazing.  The newest addition to the band, Curtis Fye on bass, seemed like he had been playing with them his entire life.  The ability of each member to feed off the energy of the others, while still complimenting each other made many of the songs sound that much better live than they had on Regans CD Coming or Going?.  Dying a Fool was one of the last songs they played, and I was thrilled.  The first track on her CD, this song has long been my favorite of hers.  Regan also played Molly, 1001, and Shine On all wonderful tracks that again sounded amazing in a live setting.  There is a certain element to Regans performance that cannot come across in her music unless you are witness to it as its happening.  Perhaps it is her charm, or her ability to make you think she is singing to you or for you.  Regardless of what it was, I was impressed by Regan and her band, and I was glad I had braved the snow to see their performance.
