Revenge Is:
Self-Titled
Revenge Is, made up of former members of Daybreak and the Exploder, promises a post-emo, post-punk album full of angst and anti-anthems for the indie scene. Instead, we are treated to their own rendition of clichd, guitar-heavy formulaic rock and unfulfilled promises of something new. Not that Revenge Is lacks talent. Specifically, track three on the EP, Autumn Cons, shows a real talent for songwriting and musicianship, breaking away from solid straight guitar driven progressions and solos to deliver a fast-paced walking beat rock song. But the other tracks of the EP slam you in the face with their guitar rock anthems of anti-everything. The other tracks of the album seem to blend together, and not in a cohesive way. Simply put, they sound like four renditions of the same song, using different lead guitars each time. And let me clarify this: for that genre, these boys sure can carry their own. But for me, it was reminiscent of college dorm years, walking into any indie kids room and hearing one of seventeen indie rock bands each indistinguishable from the last for a fan like myself. This band rocks heavy and hard - just in such a predictable way. In the end, Revenge Is provides little for the listener with a discerning ear. Clichd and formulaic, the album presents nothing new to the ever-expanding, ever-experimental world of music today. But for any indie rock fan looking for a throwback to the standard mid-nineties sound, heres your ticket. Just disregard the promises of something new and different
