RINGSEND Four years ago, singer/guitarist Chris Edwards, a native of Birmingham, Ala., first joined forces with pianist Josh "Knuckles" Harvey at Washington and Lee University in Harvey's home town of Lexington, Va. Harvey was already well-established in his own right, having shared the stage with the likes of Dave Matthews, Agents of Good Roots, Chris Keup, and numerous others. In the musical dialogues that ensued, the two sought to strike a balance between overly-simplified pop rock and the difficult complexities of jazz. The songs that emerged remain true to this philosophy, with works at once catchy to the musically uninitiated and interesting to the musician-listener. The project gained momentum with the addition of Chris Tully, a young bassist from the New York punk and ska scenes, and solidified in the fall of 2000 with the advent of Washington, D.C. drummer Anthony Allen. Through complex vocal arrangement and unique instrumentation, the Richmond-based Ringsend paints a sonic landscape. Anthony employs a unique mix of acoustic and electronic drums - a distinctive combination complimented by Chris Tully's use of various bass effects. Guitarist Chris Edwards favors his 1966 Guild hollowbody electric guitar, producing a warm, jazzy tone, while Josh plays the part of the mad scientist - switching between four keyboards: a Clavinova piano, Hammond organ, Clavinet, and Moog synthesizer.
