Rise: Uncertain Wonders

The band Rise is self-described as Alternative Folk, and they come to us from the West Coast of Scotland.  This group brings forth a mix of traditional, yet modern songs in a CD that should successfully promote their self-growth from infancy to childhood and further.

Uncertain Wonders satisfies with a mix of folk in a rock beat. Set to this sound are some original love tunes and thought-provoking traditional tunes that left me wanting to know more about the band members and their homeland. The music conjures up a mixture of sight and sound drawn from creative imagery and a pleasant menagerie of old and new melodies that elicit more than bagpipes and Robert Burns.  Youll surely draw pictures of the Highlands, the green pastures, and beautiful lochs (lakes) in your mind. Then on closer listen, youll be compelled to take note of the lyrics about soldiers in battle, intense relationships, and universal feelings shared throughout history.

Buffalo Song is by far the most haunting and evocative song in the collection, allowing the listener an escape to North America where our early Native American inhabitants dwelled. Yet, the scene shifts to and stays in Scotland where this awareness is deeply intensified by Cold Glencoe and Lomond.  These are traditional tunes with contrasting themes.  The former is a reference to a historical battle in typically rough Scottish weather and the latter is an enjoyable lilting love song.

Rise doesnt leave us in the past though.  Theres plenty of new music with bright rhythms and instrumentation. There are even more original love songs performed with much expertise and enriched by Dawsons melodic voice and Geoghegans deeper harmonies.

This CD accomplished the mission and invites the you to leave the hustle and bustle of your day and enjoy a wonderful, melodic respite with Uncertain Wonders.  I liked it well enough to repeat this trip and look forward to new ones on the horizon.
