ROBERT RANDOLPH & THE FAMILY BAND

Robert Randolph was discovered in 2000 whilst playing his pedal steel guitar at the first Sacred Steel convention in Florida. The centerpiece of Sacred Steel being pedal and lap steel guitars.  Randolph had begun playing the pedal steel as a teenager at his Orange, NJ, church. John Medeski of Medeski, Martin & Wood (MMW) liked Randolph so much that he asked him to record an all-instrumental gospel/blues album, The Word, with them. Randolph quickly assembled a band, which includes two of his cousins. Their career began with opening gigs for a variety of blues, jazz-funk, and jam bands such as the Derek Trucks Band, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, and Soulive.
The gospel music of Sacred Steel has been enhanced with Randolph's unique touches, including influences from his idol, Stevie Ray Vaughn, as well as R&B, blues and hip-hop. Since then he has become a fixture of the burgeoning live music scene in New York.
