The Rub:
Three Wishes
It doesnt take repeated listening ofor even a long wait intoThe Rubs first release, Three Wishes to appreciate the rich harmonies that seem to be this quintets greatest gift. Couple that with skilled musicianship favoring a jazz and classical style, and its no surprise these folks can brag about entertaining at Wolftrap and The Kennedy Center, although maybe not collectively as The Rub. Take note, dear readers, that this is band is not alternative, not lo-fi, not your typically reviewed LOTD material. Having said that, the first track, 118 is beautifully rendered, exuding patriotism in its lyric (if Im reading it correctly, that is their lyrics throughout kind of read like Wallace Stevens), but with a modest, very artistic approach enriched by melded voices seemingly made for each other. Curiously, beyond the first track, many of the songs possess a mystical quality which, although maybe not intended, would steer me towards stocking their release in the New Age rack if I were to work at Best Buy. For example, lyrics throughout the album include questions presented to table/without any answers, where/magic and logic are madness, or Come with me and take a/ transcendental journey, a/magic carpet ride fit for kings, or Get up my child, its time for/the dance to begin Power on/power off, its time for the trance to find its way in. Surprising lyrics for a very talented group of musicians whoat least for a few of themshare their time playing for The Presidents Own U.S. Marine Band at The White House. But it illustrates how eclectic this group really is and how many of them successfully scratched an itch to depart from more regimented music. Dare I say that they remind me of Enya and her material, minus some of that trademark echo and Philip Glass-like repetition? Every reviewer must find comparisons, you know, and this is a) a comparison I cant get out of my head, and b) the closest one I can make. Damnit, the harmonies are that good. It would be tough, but maybe I should start buying amber crystals and just give in.
