Run Away from
the Humans: We Exist EP
Did I like this EP? I really dont know. For the most part I was distracted by the synth drumbeats that were used throughout the six songs on We Exist. The melodies were in place, there was some nice instrumentation, the vocals were alright and worked with the music, but I just could not get past the overuse of fake drums. Why? Brian Romaniello is a competent drummer when his back beats are heard throughout the disc. Was it an attempt to add texture? Maybe, but its result was to distract me from the music and lyrics. Its possible that Im just not the right listener for this music, but that being said, what else is the problem? It took about five listens for me to start to appreciate the songwriting. This is the trios debut release, and I have to say that with the exception of the mechanical drums, it was a well played EP. There are some smart lyrics, pleasantly melodic guitar work and cool keyboard parts. The bands primary songwriter, Jason McBride, cites that one of his influences is Kraftwerk, and you can hear that throughout the album, particularly on the track Lost My Way. The first two tracks come very close to a Radiohead sort of indie rock vibe, but never quite hit the stride, and yes, the drums play a part in that. I thought the track All That Was Left Were Ashes was a well-crafted tune with some personal lyrics: Dear Lord/ Break the fall/ Save us/ Dont let us go/ All is safe now/ I dont want to say goodbye. This song allows us to get more involved and more in touch with the band. Perhaps thats the problem: I think those damn drum sounds play a part in blocking my ability to get to know this band, and it leaves me at a loss for how I feel about the band and its music.
