Futurists: Our Thickness
Matthew Adam Hart, otherwise known as the Russian Futurists, has resurrected, from the ashes of 80s synthesizers and long forgotten electro-loops, a lush score of econo-pop medleys that sound not unlike Pet Sounds blaring through the speakers in a dilapidated low-rider souped-up with sweet hydraulics. But dont be fooled by his clever sequences and beaming boy charm, for beneath the dense loops and hard-hitting beats exists a steadfast heart that refuses to give into the frailty of mortality. The songs are both catchy, kitschy and, as weve seen on previous records, hell make a one hundred dollar production sound like a million bucks. Our Thickness seamlessly weaves a seemingly infinite number of tracks into a cohesive whole. Hart effortlessly melds the grittier analog with the crispier digital sequences in his compositions. The delay on his voice is akin to the delay used on Orange Cake Mix vocals, but the delivery is right on, like a pianist retaining the sustain just long enough so as to not muddy up the melody. His lyrical content is distilled like the finite nails in a coffin when the stubborn mind would just prefer to wade in the agonizing limbo of denial. Although Hart's songs contain repetitive melody lines and rhythmic patterns that rarely deviate from the vocal melody, each song in relation to itself is quite inventive. Fans of his previous albums will appreciate this records similarity and will equally applaud his departure into a much more diverse soundscape, complete with choruses of singers and a virtual orchestra. Hart envelopes the room in bouncy lounge music that will become endearingly engrained in your memory like the ice cream truck jingle on a hot summer day.
