SOS: Adios Banditos
[316 Productions]

SOS call themselves a heavy melodic groove outfit.  To my ears, their album Adios Bandito sound mostly like a mix between metal and punk: think Corrosion of Conformity meets Black Flag with a touch of Nirvana.  The opener Ole Matador is a great balanced statement of this bands sound: driving guitar riffs and nice vocal hooks.  The lyrics may be nondescript, but the message is clear: play this music at a loud volume.  Some songs on Adios Bandito highlight the metal influence (Dirt), while others feel more like straight away punk (Hitchhiker).  Park and Breathing Room are darker and more textured, giving off a grunge vibe that is remarkably reminiscent of Nirvana.  Perhaps its the darker tone, but these two songs are probably my favorites on the album.  On the latter half of the album, SOS deviates somewhat from the driving hard-rock of the first half, a fact that definitely doesnt hurt this extensive album of 60+ minutes and almost 20 songs.  Take, for example, the song Think They Got Me and the lone acoustic ballad Drive; the former is a nice, quirky little track, while the latter feels like a generic ballad with vocals that are unfittingly loud.  All told, SOS is not doing anything startlingly original on Adios Bandito.  Still, the album has something to offer those who would enjoy a punk-metal hybrid band.
