The Sames: Self-Titled EP

Durham-based The Sames definitely know their roots: emo and shoegazer rock.  Their debut EP includes prime examples from both genres. "Half the Words" is a textbook example of the crescendo-ing emo chords, wailing vocals, and repetitive song structure that so completely typifies the genre. Inundating the listener in the same few melodies and hooks over and over again is sometimes the best way to get people to sing along (however mindlessly) and to like what they're hearing. This repetitious building to nowhere is at once frustrating and oddly fulfilling. Contrast that with "Plight of the Bumblebee," a categorically soft, shoegazey song infused with rising guitars and whispery, harmonizing vocals, and you have a good idea of where the other three tracks lie in the mix. This melding of genres serves The Sames well. Their bouncy song structures and sprightly guitars lift the listener up out of the quiet and atonal funk of shoegazer and emo. "I Wish That You'd Written This Song" reminds me of Boston-based Six Going on Seven's song structures and lilting melodies. The Sames seem to be on the right track, recognizing and simultaneously building upon various genres that have laid the groundwork for their music. They are a band with one foot in the past and the other in the future.
