Sancho Panza:
Ball o' String/Nuts in May (7" single)
This is a class act all the way. You start out with a clean, elegant hand-painted sleeve, minimal information under polychromatic blobs. You pull out that pure black vinyl, contrasted with blank white labels (sure, you dont know which song is on which side, but why sacrifice aesthetics for clarity?). And then you put that fucker on the turntable. Side A is Ball O String, a light, jazzy kaleidoscope of odd pop. Horns. We need more horns in our lives. I got the impression this was home-recorded, but it sounds spectacular. Reverbed falsetto back-up vox reminiscent of Bjorks Cocoon, hell, they might even be sampled. Side B is Nuts in May, reminds me of Chopsticks, that old traditional standby, being played by a one-fingered derelict on a subway train. Clicking, clacking under distorted piano, clean guitar, and dual vocal tracks that never quite match up. More fragmented and less accessible than the A-side, but I have a feeling that it might also have more durability over time. Songs like this are what the single format is for. The Sancho Panza experience might work on an album, or it might come across as self-indulgent. But 10 minutes doesnt give you enough time to worry about the implications, just the intonations and the vibrations.
