Scale Model: Twilight Dim
[self-released]

This intelligent Chicago band plays relatively straightforward guitar, bass, and drums music, with just a dash of keyboard thrown in for good measure, and its Twilight Dim release is a brief, seven-song sampling of what the band does best.

Vocalist Megan Rox is Scale Models most distinguishing musical figure, primarily because she sings these quietly rocking songs in a detached, Nico-esque manner. Although the group claims to have been influenced by such emo outfits as Sunny Day Real Estate, it mostly comes off as emotionally distant here. A couple of telling lyrical snippets stand out, such as when Rox sings of walking on eggshells during P.S., or when she blurts out no way back on Lost. Its only during Pop Star, due to its surging drum part, that Rox and Scale Model finally begin to melt their cold exterior. This song also finds Rox humming a high vocal part, which might remind you of early Morrissey on the first few Smiths recordings. In fact, Big Ideas even sports a guitar part that could have easily been taken from one of The Smiths' early tracks.

What you think of Scale Model may well depend upon how you react to chilly Rox. Its hard to warm up to a singer that is the vocal equivalent of an ice queen fashion model. But if youre looking for icy cool, Scale Model has got it and in cubes.
