The Scaries:
Souvenir
The Scaries and their third album Souvenir hail from Chapel Hill, NC the information sheet from their label, Law Of Inertia, says band from Chapel Hill that simply did not fit into the typical Chapel Hill sound. The Scaries are then further labeled as emotional pop-punk. Not being from Chapel Hill, I am no authority on this, but from what I have heard this is probably true. Where this would not be true is in the New York/New Jersey music scene, in which bands like this are plentiful and overdone. The Scaries, on a first name basis are: Bill, Mike, Matt and Matt. Their vocalist is unidentified in their liner notes, as is the lyricist, no matter. Point is, when they sing, Ive been waiting all alone and wanting more, I am reminded of my ongoing quest to find and love music that is original and rocks! Something, anything that blows me away! There is nothing intriguing like that on this recording. Who would want to listen to this record? Some poor lad who has recently had his heart broken by an evil temptress of the female persuasion, who left him confused and very, very angry thats who. There are only so many emotional pop-punk bands that can exist before the whole genre might as well just take a piss, sincerely. Get over it if you base your whole entire album on a relationship gone bad what is next? I have seen bands like that and they have ended up aged beyond their years and no more the wiser, just complacent. Yeah, these guys can play their instruments, and they have two 7-inches, as well as two other full lengths under their belts, but that aint nothing. Better bands have come before them and many, many will come after them. It is with a slight, written gag that I share this destructive nugget of information: Souvenir was mixed and mastered by Derron Nuhfer who also recorded Creeds early recordings. Pardon? When did being a less than mediocre emo-pop band and having the ghost of Creed haunting your recording studio become good things? Why would a band in this particular genre point out this Nuhfer fellow as a contributor on their release? Does that mean they are really into Creed? Does it mean they just want to make many dollars on their not so great record and then fade away into obscurity like the Creed before them? Is this what having a not so typical band in Chapel Hill leads to? Count me out proceed at your own risk.
