The Screwtape Letters: Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?

Ok, so the editor from Left Off the Dial sent hit-men to my home to scare the piss out of me so that I'd finally write the review for the Screwtape Letters Where are you going? Where have you been?  See its not that I didnt write it to begin with but hey, did your teachers ever believe you when you told them that your dog ate your homework? Neither did mine.

At any rate, this album is actually decent; the reason Im surprised is because I read somewhere that these guys all went to some ultra-Christian academy, and I'm usually really skeptical to get too into the lyrics of bands like that. The first song, Turn The Light On, isn't about becoming a born again Christian like I thought it was going to be. Actually, it might be about that, but I dont care, because its really heartfelt and who cares if its about Jesus... Who cares if any of these songs are about Jesus? The singer Joey Witham seems to be the biggest fan of Jesus in this band because he's the only one who thanked him in the liner notes, so you gotta wonder if he's gonna try and sneak some of that Christian-rock mind control over the listener. I'm not worried though because his voice is really poignant, and the other musicians are on time also.

The last track on the album, Fade, has lyrics that really hit church: "everyone's turned to Catherine/ Its unusual she don't love Jesus" This song only makes me laugh because of my deep religious connection to Left Off the Dial's fearless leader, who's name is coincidentally Catherine.   Don't look for any meaning in this song if you are listening to it, because you wont find any. It just talks about fading into the sun and winters getting warmer. Its a disappointing ending for an album that was really good up to that point but oh well. I suppose I had to realize that the only way someone who was born Jewish could be a true Screwtape Letters fan would be to have been "saved." Damn.

I was actually disappointed the first time I listened to this album because for a past few months, I've listened almost exclusively to bands from Texas and these guys didn't meet my Texas expectations, but I was mildly surprised that I didnt absolutely hate it just because the singer had some kind of spiritual devotion.  Oh well, I guess my Texas phase is coming to an end and now I can devote my musical attention to all bands from Omaha, Nebraska.  The Saddle Creek bands are the all-stars of indie-rock, and maybe Saddle Creek should look to the Screwtape Letters for a signing possibility.
