Selfmademan:The Daylight Robbery
As I read Selfmademans press kit, these guys seemed right up my alley. It's always way more pleasurable to review bands you know you'll probably like. Their press kit compares them to bands I already love and describes a tour with Small Brown Bike. These guys win. So now that I admit I am biased, let's give this album a listen. Though their sound was almost what I expected, I must admit I was just a tad disappointed. I think it has to do with the recording quality though; I can barely hear the singer's voice, and the whole album sounds a little strange. The guitar riffs are tight yet altogether been-done. Still, these guys are rock-and-roll incarnate. Energetic, abrasive, upbeat this is the kind of band that makes you pump your fist in the air. "Numbered Like a Calendar" is one of those songs where you have to keep skipping back to it. It sticks in your head. In the middle of the album, an acoustic ballad is thrown in the mix for a very nice change of pace. This definitely creates a wonderful contrast, amplifying the loud songs by comparison, and accentuating the subtle chord changes on the acoustic guitar duet. The album closes with a very powerful tune that has the drummer playing a math-tastic beat right in the middle, giving the song the lift it needs to carry the album across the finish line. The feedback decays into beeps and squeals, and you are left in silence. In conclusion, this album isn't breaking any new ground, but it's still a damn good listen. If these guys keep up their tour schedule with hot bands, and put out a slightly clearer recording, they will definitely be going places.
