Seneca Laines:
Self-Titled EP
The self-titled debut E.P. by Seneca Laines sounds like something that might have come out during the era of Sonic Youths Daydream Nation. The lead singers vocals would actually resemble Dean Wareham of Luna if he actually stopped singing through his nose. The vocals seem to waver in and out of Kim Gordon-style articulations, with a tone that more closely resembles that of Thurston Moore. While the monotone quality of the vocals seem to nicely compliment the ornate guitar work and the heavier garage sound, one quickly tires of the static vocal range that seems to fumble around aimlessly in feigned conviction, falling short of convincing the listener that the music being created is anything more than a big budget movie: nice scenery, mediocre plot. Thus, one purchasing a Seneca Laines full-length album might appreciate bolder and less jammy singing (and possibly some liner notes for words that are difficult to make out). This is precisely the problem with this EP, for it seems somewhat uninspired, and this sentiment becomes more apparent to the listener as it draws to a close. Even though the final two songs Open Chain and Never a Lender seem to experiment more rhythmically and lyrically, they come too late, like a catatonic child sitting in the back of the class, who all of a sudden has a thought come to him moments after his classmates have left. Unfortunately the culmination of this album feels more like a remote spike from the flat line of a patient on an artificial respirator.
