Shade / The Silver Thread: Split 7" EP
[Psychodaisy]

Two Pittsburgh, PA bands give us a tasty little split 7 record that unintentionally showcases some of the bigger trends in indie rock right now.

Side A starts off with two tracks from The Silver Thread.  While not nearly as dancy as  dance-punk NYC hipsters, The Rapture, The Silver Threads lead vocalist bears a resemblance to the aforementioned band in a post-punk, cant decide if I wanna sound like Robert Smith or Jello Biafra sort of way. Are You Ready to Go and Control, the two songs offered up by The Silver Thread do possess a similar danceable energy to the NYC band, and while the instrumentation here is straight guitars, I wouldnt be surprised or disappointed to hear a synthesizer in their next release, as they sound to be on the brink of retro-mania.

Flipping the record, we get a B-side with two space-rock, shoegaze droners from Shade: Gunner and Slow Burn.  The former features some nice guitar and vocal distortion, and the latter is a slow dirge which resembles more closely the work on Shades full-length, Forever Now, Nowhere Tomorrow.  Slow Burn has the band's lead vocalist nearly replicating Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, who is a Brit-imitator himself.

This is an excellent EP to pick up if you are interested in discovering two new bands making intriguing music in the Steel City.  Highly recommended.
