The Shakedowns: On
[VMS/Morphius]

The Shakedowns are a band from Virginia/ D.C. area doing music that sounds like it was produced in the seventies, although the band has only been in rock since 1998.  They play rock for the rocker and by rocker I mean jeans and a tight t-shirt that you didnt buy yesterday, and pop for those who dont know any better.  There is no posturing or hype, which is cool with me because I just cant take anymore hype from self-attributing garage bands.  It may not be so grand for the guys in The Shakedowns though, if stardom is what they are after.

Recently signed to VMS Records, The Shakedowns have released On as a two-disc set.  It is jam-packed with old songs, new songs, and three videos.  When I first got it in the mail for review, my first thought was Who the fuck are these guys? They already have a double-disc release with back catalog material? One reason for this is that their first album Rock n Roll Makes Me Sick is completely out of print, so they are treating their new fans (and some old, I presume) to music they never could have hoped to own fabulous.  I for one think it is a bit excessive for a band that has not even reached double digit years in their young relationship, to release an album with back catalog.  The songs are alright, but the album as a whole is not great.  The sound is a bit nouveau-punky for my tastes, but I am sure there are people out there with affections far less discriminating than mine.

The Shakedowns arent revolutionary, but they are pretty good at what they are putting out there.  If you filter through the twenty-nine tracks on the album, you are bound to find a couple of tunes worth tapping your foot to.  A little rock n roll never hurt nobody.  But too much been-there, heard-it-already, pop-punk could ruin your soul youve been warned.
