Sharif: Kiss The Moon EP

Have you ever had a tune stuck in your head and just couldnt get it out?  Of course, you have who hasnt?  Well, I tell you that after listening to Sharifs  Kiss the Moon EP (2001, Annex Group), my ears would not let go of his darn music.  This is bad for me trying to sleep, but good for Sharif.  His catchy (an understatement) music has been self-dubbed as meditative dream pop.  The songs definitely have a feel of airiness almost as if the entire disc comes with an anti-gravitational device.  This is most apparent on the first track "Sacrifice."  It begins with a bubbly electronic keyboard solo and proceeds with some interesting lyrics.  Sharif harmonizes: So dont waste time, your bodys on the line; this time its on tonight, its time to sacrifice.

Other songs, including Midnight Dream and Kiss the Moon are reminiscent of Toad the Wet Sprocket except with East Coast flair.  Part of that verve is the wondrous backing vocals of Richmond, VA folk artist Regan.  Her melodic voice on songs like Sacrifice and Kiss the Moon adds immeasurably to the unique feel of the disc.  Together their sounds intertwine to produce an audible picture of the love song's content.  In fact, Sharifs roster of help on his debut EP reads something like a whos who list in central Virginia local music.  Hes backed by not only Regan, but also by Stewart Myers (formerly of Agents of Good Roots) and Chris Keup (formerly of River, and later solo).

I hesitate to comment on the songs  Envy or Through You for fear of not being able to escape their grasp on my brain.  These songs are more upbeat and read a 9.75 on the pop meter (the real pop meter, not the junk pop meter).  Sharif has the potential to have masses of people bobbing their heads to his tunes.  With a little luck and Regan backing him up, the sky is the limit for this young Virginia artist.
