The Sharp
Things: Here Comes the Sharp Things
I must start by stating for the record that the music stylings of The Sharp Things are not really my strong suit. I wouldnt gravitate towards a band that is oft referred to as an orchestral pop ensemble. With that said, this record is pretty darned good. It is a bunch of musicians combining their well-honed talents to produce a beautiful record. The songs are folk-flavored for sure, and there are even some jazz type arrangements. Perry Serpas vocals sometimes beg the question Is that Elvis Costello singing, or is it a really good impersonation? Serpa assembled a talent-packed ensemble in early 2000 and the just let the music fly. 2003s Here Come The Sharp Things is the result of only two days of composing away in the studio. And for Serpa, it is an artistic thought process brought to life by good friends who really know how to play their instruments. The songs on the record touch on familiar life issues, those of a broken heart and of finding your place in this crazy world. The current lineup of The Sharp Things is a tight group of at least ten musicians, with an additional nine or so playing on Here Come The Sharp Things. I think that fans of pop-inflected folk music will truly appreciate this album in all its glory. Just as I think that a curious music fan might even like to borrow a friends copy and take a listen.
