Simone White:
Self-Titled
A car album this is not. While Simone Whites voice is indeed beautiful and dreamy, the album can a little get boring to the listener in need of an upbeat tune or radio-friendly pop song. Instead, this is an album to play while you are enjoying an activity and dont want the music to overpower the mood but rather help create it. This is nighttime mood music for the art folk. And yes, there are songs about love on this album; but White manages to put a slightly new twist on them, so they sound like originals instead of cheap copies. She blends in clever lines like You had me figured out like second grade math/But I could not add two plus two in Wrong About You. The quirky and sincere lyrics suit this young New Yorker. While songs like America in 54 and I Didnt Have a Summer Romance sound like classic gems, Train Song and Shots show a more playful side. White sounds as though she is really enjoying herself. I would like to see her let loose a little more, not only to break up the sleepy sound of the majority of her songs, but also because her voice is well-suited to this playful style. From actress to photographer, this young artist seems to have really found herself in her latest effort. With a melodically scratchy voice reminiscent of Cat Powers Chan Marshall, Miss White sounds born to sing. This album boasts a layered acoustic sound, brought by many guest musicians, that blends harmoniously with her voice. Whether backed up by soft acoustic guitar, piano, or the sexy sound of the upright bass, Simone Whites voice shines in this folksy yet soulful debut.
