Six7:
Self-Titled
First things first. This is not the latest release from England's masters of shoegaze Six By 7. This is a seven-track demo from NYC's antifolk hero who goes by the name of Six7. This one-man show purports that his legal name is "Pat FitzGerald," but not too many people would be surprised if he alternately uses the name "Gerald FitzPatrick" This record is a rare treat for those who appreciate Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa for their ability to balance humor and serious musicianship. Six7's irreverence is reminiscent of The Billy Nayer Show (the band that did the music for the film "The American Astronaut"), because the lyrics tow the line of being hilarious or outright scary. It is sort of like Jack Nicholson's smile. It seems completely sweet, but after awhile, you get the feeling that he's a total creep scout. The same theory applies to the song "The Cookie," when absurdity leads to a frightening climax of Six7 singing "bling bling blang blang ching ching chang chang/then you get the/then you get the oh, oh, oh". The song is either a reference to mass consumerism or an orgasm. Either way, getting the cookie is probably a good thing. Six7's quirky persona might seem Christ-like (especially on his website), but he is not a harmful man. It is all part of the act. If you are part of the Sidewalk Cafe clique in NYC, then Six7 is already familiar to you. However, if you picked up a copy of "Antifolk, Vol. 1" (Rough Trade) and you are searching for something equally satisfying, this demo is it.
