Sluts of
Trust: We Are All Sluts of Trust
From the first song on their debut album, Sluts of Trust give you a nice punch in the face to shatter your expectations. The band is a two-person collaboration from Glasgow, Scotland, an area known for churning out indie-rock heavyweights like Franz Ferdinand, Teenage Fanclub and Chemikal Underground labelmates like Arab Strap and The Delgados. The release in question, We Are All Sluts of Trust, may not sound like any of these bands, but Sluts of Trust display an enthusiasm to break into a rock style by their own rules. Opener Thats RightThat Cats Right hits you right off with a rolling rhythm track before building up some momentum with some jabbing lyrics and fast guitar licks. Apparently the limitations of two band members are irrelevant in the studio, because the instrumentation appears quite dense throughout the LP. How theyd perform live without some help is a bit of a mystery to me, but this is certainly an album with some fast and multi-layered tracks. The first song ends with a bit of Van Halen/Daft Punk-like guitar noodling and it speeds right into the lunacy of Piece O You. The lyrics really are nothing exciting at all, but the singing melds well with the songs regardless of the occasionally vapid lyrical content. Unlike some Glaswegians, Sluts of Trust seem to be having too much fun kicking ass to get hung up on the meaning of their words. That could make them a hard sell to some music fans, but it doesnt really bother me. After hearing the album a few times, its the rock grooves and flow of the album that keep me coming back for more. Leave You Wanting More starts off with a guitar line you might expect from old Metallica, and then the drums kick in to pound the message home. All these songs have weird structures though and strange interludes, so it really is hard to compare them to another band when the end result is so different. Actually, if you threw a singer with a thick Scottish accent and an occasionally dirty tongue into The Fucking Champs, you might end up with something similar to We Are All Sluts of Trust. The Fucking Champs are a band that do instrumentals, but rock out pretty darn hard. In the same way, Sluts of Trusts random lyrics dont really hurt them from achieving this same mission. They mellow out a bit for the track Dominoes, but the rest of the album speeds along like a train wreck you know, the kind thats pretty fun to watch. One track I really like is Meanwhile in Rocksville, even if it is just two and a half minutes of quick tempo rock indulgence, reminiscent perhaps of Blurs Chinese Bombs. So if you dont really care to hear another singers opinions on life, love, and the world in general, pick up We Are All Sluts of Trust and just concentrate on what you know is most important: rocking out.
