Smallspace:
No Matter
Smallspace is an apt name for this Michigan quintet, especially when you consider how it occupies a familiar, yet cramped, stylistic space that could honestly be called Radiohead-ville. This situation leaves it sounding eerily like a group of Radiohead-heads, because its No Matter release is almost more Radiohead-y than the real Radiohead! Vocalist Jon Faber mumbles/sings Thom Yorke-like throughout these eleven depressed, minor-key rock tracks. This band does separate itself at least a little bit from Radiohead, however, it never gets as guitar-y as was The Bends, nor does it become as overtly electronic as was Kid A. Instead, this group takes listeners on a head trip, which is built upon a vehicle of piano, acoustic guitar, and generally subtle rock. Standout tracks include Put Down, which is driven by upfront piano and a Faber vocal that may remind you of Rufus Wainwright. This particular song comes off like a spooky piano bar ballad from outer space. Come Down Wake Up is also notable for its aggressive rock elements. Sadly, variety is not a term that comes to mind too often when this album is playing. Much like an interior decorator with limited vision, Smallspace has not filled up its workspace too wisely here.
