The Smittens:
A Little Revolution
From the album cover to the band’s music, the Smittens portray a happy and friendly band of misfits putting out simple, sweet songs of love and innocence. A Little Revolution is the band’s second album, and it’s a dreamy little collection of good time tunes. I really appreciate the band’s motif; they don’t take themselves too seriously, their approach to music is honest and sweet, and they genuinely sound like they are having a good time. This is “get me out of the blues” indie rock, and the world could quite possibly be a better place if there was more music like this. I think the band itself does a better job then I could in summing up its message: “The Smittens are still all about kindness and a gentler world, because being nice is a political act.” That may be a little too much candy to swallow, but one thing is for sure: the music surely reflects that statement. The vocal harmonies, along with the choice of instrumentation remind me of the Magnetic Fields. The Smittens are very artsy in their approach, with tons of synth, catchy little guitar hooks, very simple drums and pleasant vocals with two boys and a girl singing away. The first track that stuck out at me was “Guess What!?,” which opens with “Guess what, you suck/ Guess why, you’re mean.” That lyric sample can help anyone figure out the vibe and approach this band is going for, and there are other clever numbers like “Tell Al Green,” a fun make out song, and “Nate is Straight,” which is self-explanatory. So, here’s the deal with the Smittens – they’ve often been referred to as “much too cute,” and I totally concur. Some may take that as a negative, but I’ll take cute over sexy any day.
