Soltero: The Tongues You Have Tied
[Three Ring]

How do you know when you consider an album an important addition to your collection?  When its lost and you find yourself looking around for a good 15 minutes without stopping until its found.  Since that day, this album has hardly been out of my player or far from my ears.

Ive struggled with exactly how to describe the music Tim Howard has created on his newest album The Tongues You Have Tied.  New folk pop perhaps, although with such interestingly quirky tracks, the word pop doesnt quite fit.  But add in a little alt-country with a low fading voice and you almost have it.  There is something about the music that plays through your mind long after the tunes have ended but not in an annoying commercial jingle sort of way.  Instead the result is more subtle, like being content to sit under a tree to watch the lighting storm and enjoying your inner radio.

The songs have that certain something that keeps the listener coming back for more.  Both the simplistic vocal and musical approach is reminiscent of Elliot Smith except with a lot more egg shaker.  This fits Soltero well, and they continue to add their own unique twist to love lost and found.

With Howards almost haunting, low vocals and Simon & Garfunkel type harmonies, he has managed to take a breather and include some instrumental tracks.  These great little moments are dispersed evenly through the album, creating sort of a smooth river for the rest of the album to float over.  I especially enjoy Cloth River Song with its seemingly random piano plunking.

Full of depth and momentary happiness and spilling over with soul, this is Solteros best work to date and is destined to become a 2004 favorite.
